A Piece of School History

A fascinating piece of Loughton School’s administrative history has been generously donated to the Old Loughtonians Association.
This vintage mechanical Monroe calculator was once a vital workhorse in the school office, used for decades to meticulously calculate school fees. Long before spreadsheet software and digital computers took over, calculating terms, fees, and extras required mechanical precision. This robust machine—with its full keyboard layout, sliding decimal markers, and manual crank handles—is a wonderful reminder of the daily life and administrative effort that kept the school running.
A huge thank you to the donor for preserving this remarkable artifact and passing it into our care. It stands as a brilliant tangible link to our shared past and will be proudly kept as part of the Association’s archive.
